FSCJ Softball Volunteers with Field of Dreams Baseball
Florida State College at Jacksonville's softball program traded competition for compassion on Friday, February 6, volunteering under the lights with Field of Dreams Baseball to support youth with disabilities. The event highlighted the power of sports to bring people together while creating a welcoming, inclusive environment for young athletes of all abilities.
Field of Dreams Baseball is a local organization dedicated to giving children with physical and intellectual disabilities the opportunity to play baseball in a fun, supportive setting. Players are encouraged to enjoy the game at their own pace, with an emphasis on teamwork, confidence, and joy rather than scores or statistics.
FSCJ student-athletes served as buddies for the players, helping them hit, run the bases, and celebrate every moment on the field. From cheering in the dugout to offering high-fives at home plate, the Manta Rays made sure every participant felt supported and celebrated.
"For us, it's about giving back and using our platform to make a difference," said head coach Sabrina Hartsell. "Seeing the smiles and excitement from the kids reminds us why sports matter beyond the scoreboard."
The evening was filled with laughter, encouragement, and unforgettable memories for both the players and volunteers. Parents and organizers expressed their gratitude for the Manta Rays' involvement, noting the positive impact college athletes can have as role models in the community.
By partnering with Field of Dreams Baseball, the FSCJ Manta Rays Softball team demonstrated their commitment not only to excellence on the field, but also to service to the community off it. The Friday night event served as a powerful reminder that when sports and community come together, everyone wins.
